A plasma gasi­fier is an oxy­gen starved ves­sel where var­i­ous feed­stocks can be gasi­fied using the very high tem­per­a­tures achiev­able with plasma. Rather than being com­busted, the heat  breaks the feed­stock down into ele­ments like hydro­gen and sim­ple com­pounds like car­bon monox­ide and water. The gas that is cre­ated is called syn­the­sis gas or “syn­gas”. The syn­gas cre­ated in the gasi­fier, which con­tains dust (par­tic­u­lates) and other unde­sir­able ele­ments like mer­cury, under­goes a clean-up process to make it suit­able for con­ver­sion into other forms of energy includ­ing power, heat and liq­uid fuels. The diox­ins in exhaust gas and fly ash from waste incin­er­a­tion sta­tions could cause can­cer, and thus many waste incin­er­a­tion or waste-to-energy projects were dis­ap­proved by the gov­ern­ment, although the grow­ing cities are fac­ing grow­ing waste man­age­ment pres­sure. Plasma gasi­fi­ca­tion can totally break down diox­ins because of the high tem­per­a­ture (about 3000 °C). Fly ash treat­ment and exhaust gas treat­ment would be a tar­get appli­ca­tion attrac­tive for waste man­age­ment indus­try in the Chi­nese market. Linked the plas­mas tech­nol­ogy with a Chi­nese com­pany –Guang­dong Heng­bao Electro­mechan­i­cal Equip­ment Corp. (GHEEC) — for co-engineering of a fly ash treat­ment project from one of the biggest W2E sta­tion with 500 ton waste /day vol­ume. The sta­tion would like to install two units of 50 ton/day plasma fur­naces for 80 ton fly ash treat­ment per day.
